Today we celebrate the arrival 75 years ago of the first of the ‘Windrush generation’ who came in their thousands from the Caribbean on HMT Empire Windrush with hope in their hearts for a new life and willingness to support Britain rebuild after the 2nd world war. Their determination, resilience and dignity in the face of horrendous racism and ingratitude is an example to us all. We thank them for their example and the rich culture they brought which has enhanced the UK in so many ways and for the generations who come after them who are an intrinsic part of what it means to be British. To celebrate this day we share Ben Okri’s reflections “Windrush Glowing on the Strand” read by him today on the BBC’s World at One.
