Transfer of Steiner Academies to The Avanti Schools Trust.
The Steiner Academies at Frome, Exeter and Bristol have been transferred to the Avanti Schools Trust (AST) and are no longer Steiner schools. Their new names are Avanti Park, Avanti Hall and Avanti Gardens respectfully.
Following the transfer of the schools on 1 November 2019, SWSF was represented on the Interim Hub Executive Board (IHEB) for the three academies which had been established to secure the interim governance of the schools.
A curriculum review was commissioned by AST shortly after taking over the schools. Led by Dr James Biddulph, its terms of reference were to explore where aspects of the Steiner Waldorf Curriculum were in synergy with the Avanti Way. Adrian Dow, Headteacher at Greenwich Steiner School (GSS) provided information to the review team who visited GSS and Dr Martyn Rawson, a Steiner specialist provided a written response to an early draft of the report. Neither were members of the review team and SWSF was not consulted.
Whilst the review was taking place, AST undertook to retain each school’s existing curriculum until September 2020. Parents were to be consulted and many were therefore hopeful that some aspects of the Steiner approach would remain.
The report of the curriculum review and the AST Board’s response was published to parents on 4 May 2020. The proposed new curriculum includes little of the Steiner Waldorf approach. Most significantly, the start to formal learning, has been lowered to age four from age six and children will take the Key Stage 1 test at age seven. SWSF has therefore withdrawn from its role on the IHEB and the schools have been removed from the list of Steiner Waldorf schools. The SWSF statement in response to the publication of the curriculum review can be downloaded and viewed by clicking here and a letter sent to the Secretary of State for Education can be downloaded and viewed by clicking here.
Please note that the Steiner Academy Hereford remains a Steiner Waldorf school and a full member of the SWSF.
About the Directory
All SWSF listed member schools are registered charities regulated by the Charity Commission or relevant body and are also registered with the requisite agencies of government and receive inspection from their national education inspectorates. Different arrangements, however, apply to schools in the Republic of Ireland. In addition to complying with national regulations, member institutions receive advisory support and accreditation through the Fellowship. The SWSF operates an accreditation process for developing Schools and Early Childhood settings in order to support them in becoming full member organisations. The SWSF directory includes:
- Full member schools.
- Schools and EY settings (denoted by asterisks) in the process of becoming full members. They undergo regular accreditation visits from experienced colleagues.
- Interest groups, consisting of groups working to establish Steiner education activities, or using them for home education. These are non-accredited.
- Affiliated schools or organisations with compatible aims and objectives in mutually supportive communication with SWSF. These are non-accredited.
Note: The SWSF holds the legal mark for ‘Steiner’ and ‘Waldorf’ and a school or EY setting cannot legally use either term in the name without the consent of the SWSF. Back to top
